  • Bookish Bliss: Diving into "Empire of Ache and Ruin" & Racing through "Off to the Races"

There's nothing quite like that magical mix of a new ARC in hand and an audiobook buzzing in your ears while you tackle life. This week's reading vibes? A perfect blend of soft chaos and full obsession. I just got my hands on an advanced reader copy of Empire of Ache and Ruin by Diana A. Hicks(thank you to the author and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the opportunity) and when I say this cover is beautiful-I mean it. I opened the package and couldn't wait to dive into this book. The cover is so simple but in such a stunning way-it's giving dark romance with a side of destruction. Meanwhile, in my ears? Off to the Races by Elsie Silver is giving me all the small-town romance vibes I could want. It's our current read for The Tattered Pages Society (18+ book club I run through Fable) and I am LOVING it. Empire of Ache & Ruin Format: Physical ARC Status:  Just started—but fully hooked Page Count: 592 pages Vibe So Far: Dark romance with a twist of suspense and a dash of ballet elegance I’m only a few chapters in, but Empire of Ache & Ruin is already flexing hard. Hicks wastes zero time immersing you in a dark, layered world with a tone that feels both sharp and aching. The title doesn’t lie—it’s already full of emotional weight and a sense of slow unraveling. There’s a cinematic quality to Hicks’ prose that I’m loving—visual, vivid, and just a little brutal. The kind of story that pulls no punches and doesn’t offer quick answers. I’m predicting obsession, secrets, and probably a good cry by the time I close the back cover. I’ll definitely be posting a full review once I finish, but first impressions? This book demands your full attention—and if you love tortured characters, unrelenting chemistry, and the kind of romance that leaves scars, this one’s for you. Off to the Races Current Progress: Chapter 14(about 40%) Listening speed: 3.0x (ty ADHD) Narrators: C.J. Bloom and Tim Paige Vibe: Slow-burn with so much tension, COWBOYS This isn't my first right with Elsie Silver-I've already devoured the first two books in her Chestnut Springs series, dipped a little into the third, so I knew OTTR was going to deliver. And WOW does she not miss. The tension in this book is that delicious kind that practically sizzles in your ears. Elsie's got a knack for writing characters that feel so real and emotionally complex, and she always pairs that with chemistry that burns slow and hot-coming from someone who doesn't typically like the slow-burn books. Final Thoughts This week feels like a perfect reflection of why I love being able to read through multiple formats-an audiobook to carry me through chores & walks, and a physical book for when I can slow down, curl up, and lose time to another world. Both books are reminding me of how good romance can be when it balances intensity and intimacy. Until next time, happy reading-and may your book hangovers be deep, dramatic, and worth EVERY page!

  • April 29, 2025: A Day of Diverse and Anticipated Book Releases

I always get excited around the end of April, because it feels like publishing tries to sneak some major releases in before the big summer season hits. This year is no different. April 29, 2025, is packed with some seriously good books across every genre. Whether you're after a gut-punch romance, a smart thriller, or a fantasy that'll swallow you whole, there's something coming out that's going to ruin your sleep schedule. Below, I've pulled together the books I think are worth knowing about, broken down by genre. I've included covers, real descriptions, and not just back-cover blurbs — we're talking about vibes, tropes, and who these books are for. Romance & Contemporary Fiction Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry If you've read Emily Henry before, you already know she doesn't write simple romances. She writes stories that cut into the messy parts of life and love. Great Big Beautiful Life  leans even harder into that — a romance wrapped around a literary mystery. Expect complicated characters, sharp dialogue, and the kind of emotional payoff that leaves you gutted (in the best way). Wildest Dreams by L.J. Shen L.J. Shen always brings the emotional chaos, and Wildest Dreams  promises even more. It's the second book in the Forbidden Love series, and it's packed with forbidden relationships, sharp banter, and emotional gut-punches. If you like your romance a little dark and a lot messy, this is your move. All Too Well (Ember Falls) by Corinne Michaels Corinne Michaels knows how to write a small town better than just about anyone. All Too Well  kicks off a new series called Ember Falls — think lifelong friendships, small-town drama, and swoony second chances. Plus, there's a deluxe edition with sprayed edges if you're a collector. Insert cover here King of Envy by Ana Huang Ana Huang's Kings of Sin series is known for its luxury, scandal, and unputdownable tension. King of Envy  brings a scarred billionaire and a supermodel into each other's orbits — and it does not play nice. Expect steam, sabotage, and plenty of twisted loyalties. Mystery & Thriller 25 Alive by James Patterson & Maxine Paetro At this point, the Women's Murder Club is basically a literary institution. In 25 Alive , Lindsay Boxer is pulled back into the most personal case of her career after a former partner is murdered. High body count, short chapters, pure adrenaline — Patterson fans already know what they're getting. How to Seal Your Own Fate by Kristen Perrin This one’s a cozy mystery with teeth. How to Seal Your Own Fate  bounces between 1967 and modern-day Castle Knoll, unraveling a cold case that’s anything but simple. For readers who like their mysteries a little quirky but still clever. The Murder Machine by Heather Graham Smart homes just got a lot less safe. The Murder Machine  brings techno-thriller energy to a classic serial killer plot. If you've ever side-eyed your Alexa, this one might make you unplug it permanently. Fantasy & Science Fiction House of Blight by Maxym M. Martineau This kicks off The Threadmender Chronicles, and it’s got "future obsession" written all over it. A world where magic stitches reality together, and one wrong move can literally unravel it. Atmospheric, rich, and perfect if you like your fantasy dark but hopeful . The Amalfi Curse by Sarah Penner Sarah Penner (The Lost Apothecary) is back, this time diving deep into sunken secrets off the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Curse  is a historical mystery wrapped in a supernatural thriller — if you want a summer read that’s gorgeous and a little eerie, add this. The Ghost Woods by C.J. Cooke Creepy old house lovers, come get your book. The Ghost Woods is gothic fiction done right: a crumbling manor, family secrets, whispers in the night. Perfect for readers who want something haunting but deeply human. Final Thoughts April 29th isn’t playing around when it comes to new releases. Whether you’re in the mood for a complicated love story, a thriller that’ll keep you up past midnight, a fantasy to get lost in, or a story rooted in real history, there’s something here you’re going to want to grab. If you end up picking any of these up, let me know which ones you’re most excited for — or if you found a hidden gem I missed. One Last Thing Before You Go... Before you click out and go adding books to your TBR (or cart), I’ve got one more reveal for you — and if you're into small towns, heartfelt romance, and just the right amount of healing-through-hard-things, this one's worth sticking around for. Kim Swizz is back with the next book in her Wilcox Grove series. You might remember Barefoot Lake , the one that introduced us to that quiet little lakeside town where second chances aren’t just possible — they’re necessary. Now, she's pulling us right back in with book two: In the Stars Rewritten And yes — the cover is finally here. Drum Roll Please Click here to preorder on kindle! Seven months ago, Scott Preston visited home and met the girl of his dreams. She’s fierce, loud, authentic, kind, and gorgeous in a way that altered his brain chemistry. But fate wasn’t having it, and they both went to their respective homes hundreds of miles apart. Now he’s back, and she’s standing in his house. He’s determined not to let her go again, but she’s hesitant to take that leap. Piper Price is used to being the life of the party, the one you call for a great time. She’s always said she’s good in small doses, but she’s rarely found anybody interested in sticking around. She wants stability and a partner, but she isn’t willing to lose herself to get that. Now she’s tangled up in the small town of Wilcox Grove, and is terrified one wrong step will tear everything apart. In the Stars Rewritten is a small-town, second chance, roommates, he falls first, golden retriever MMC adult romance. • 10 Essential Elements That Make a Romance Book Truly Unforgettable

What Makes a Romance Book Unforgettable? Let’s Chat About It! Romance books have been stealing hearts for generations — weaving together love, longing, laughter, and a whole lot of personal growth. Every story has its own special spark, but there are a few key ingredients that really make a romance stick with you long after you close the book. Whether you’ve been a romance reader forever or you’re just starting to fall for the genre (welcome, by the way!), knowing what makes a love story truly unforgettable makes the experience even sweeter. So, let’s dive into the magic, shall we? 1. Characters You Can’t Help But Root For At the heart of every great romance are the characters. We want heroes and heroines who feel real  — people we can see ourselves in, flaws and all. They need clear dreams, messy pasts, and a few stumbles along the way. Take Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice , for example. She’s brilliant and sassy, but her prejudices make her just as human as the rest of us. Watching her grow (and fall for Mr. Darcy) is what makes their love story feel so earned. When characters are layered — with hopes, fears, mistakes, and quiet little victories — it’s impossible not to get invested. We don’t just want them to find love — we need  them t o. 2. A Connection You Can Feel The emotional bond between characters? It’s everything. It should feel electric — those tiny looks, the stolen moments, the conversations that leave you smiling like a fool. Think about Hazel and Gus from The Fault in Our Stars.  Their raw, funny, honest conversations pull you right into their world. You’re not just reading the love story — you’re living  it right alongside them. When authors weave in little touches — like inner dialogue, longing glances, secret smiles — it pulls you even closer to the heartbeat of the story. It’s about feeling every skip, every ache, every soaring moment right along with them. 3. Tension That Keeps You Turning the Pages A little angst never hurt anyone (okay, maybe our hearts, but it’s so  worth it). Misunderstandings, outside pressures, messy timing — these obstacles make the payoff so much sweeter. The Notebook  shows us this perfectly. Noah and Allie’s love fights against class divides, parental expectations, and bad timing. Every bit of tension makes you crave the moment they finally get it right. Good tension doesn’t feel forced — it’s messy and raw, just like real love often is. And it keeps you up way past your bedtime flipping pages because you have  to know how it ends. 4. Humor That Makes You Fall Even Harder Some of my favorite romances are the ones that know when to make me laugh. Banter? Witty comebacks? Characters who make each other (and us) crack up? Chef’s kiss. The Hating Game  absolutely nails this. Lucy and Josh’s hilarious, competitive, ridiculous back-and-forth makes their chemistry spark  even more. Humor breaks up the tension, makes emotional moments hit even harder, and just makes you love spending time with the characters. Bonus points if you find yourself laughing out loud while reading — that’s how you know it’s good. 5. A Setting You Want to Step Right Into The best romances don’t just have great characters — they have a whole vibe.  A dreamy small town, a cozy bookshop, a castle on a misty hill — setting can be a character  all its own. Outlander  does this so  well. The Scottish Highlands aren’t just a backdrop — they set the entire mood for Jamie and Claire’s epic love story. You can almost smell the rain, feel the chill, hear the crunch of footsteps on stone paths. A vivid setting doesn’t just paint a picture — it wraps you up in it. It makes the world feel real and the love story even more magical. 6. Moments That Make You Feel  Everything When characters let down their walls and show us their rawest, realest selves — that’s  when the magic happens. In Me Before You , watching Louisa and Will open up about their dreams and fears is devastating and beautiful all at once. Vulnerability is what makes a love story stick. It’s not just about the kisses and grand gestures — it’s about the quiet confessions, the whispered fears, the ways characters hold each other together when everything feels like it’s falling apart. 7. An Ending That Feels Right I’m not saying it has to be a "happily ever after" every time (even though I do  love one!) — but the ending needs to feel earned.  It should honor the journey we just took with these characters. Eleanor & Park  is a great example. The ending is bittersweet and leaves a little ache in your chest — but it’s real, and it respects everything those characters went through. A satisfying ending doesn’t have to tie everything in a neat little bow. It just has to feel honest — like, "Yes, this  is how their story was meant to end." 8. Secondary Characters Who Steal Your Heart The best supporting characters aren’t just background noise — they bring the whole story to life. Think about Bridgerton  — Penelope Featherington, Eloise, Lady Danbury — they all add so much.  Secondary characters can show us different sides of the protagonists, offer comic relief, or even deliver some tough love. When they’re done right, side characters make the main romance feel even bigger  — like you’re stepping into a full, vibrant world where love is just one (glorious) part of life. 9. Fresh, Thought-Provoking Themes Some themes will always be timeless — love, loyalty, forgiveness — but when an author tackles something different,  it really makes a story pop. The Kiss Quotient  is a great example. Stella’s story isn’t just a cute romance; it’s an honest, heartwarming look at dating, love, and self-acceptance through the lens of someone living with autism. Romances that aren’t afraid to be a little bold, a little messy, a little real — those are the ones that change you just a little bit after you finish them. 10. Real, Honest Emotions Last but definitely not least: authenticity. Readers know  when a love story feels fake, and nothing kills the magic faster. The Rosie Project  nails authenticity. Don isn’t the smoothest guy in the room, and honestly, that’s what makes him so lovable. His awkwardness, his honesty, his heart — they’re all real. When a romance feels genuine — when the characters talk, think, and love like real people — it becomes unforgettable. The Final Word At the end of the day, a great romance is a journey — full of swoons, laughs, tears, and moments that make you pause and feel. It ’s the characters, the connections, the tension, the humor, the setting, the realness  — all stitched together into a story you can’t (and don’t want to) put down. So, the next time you curl up with a romance novel (preferably with a cozy blanket, a good snack, and absolutely no shame if you ugly cry at least once), pay attention to those little details that make it magic. And above all? Just enjoy every beautiful, messy, heart-stopping moment of it. Happy reading, my fellow book lovers! Click the picture to download the FREE Fable app & join the club!

  • 🌙 The Veiled Kingdom by Holly Renee — A Full, Emotional, Spoiler-Filled Review 🌙

Rating: 4.5 stars “He was the villain in my fairytale. And yet somehow, I never wanted anyone more.” Content Warnings Because I care about your hearts (and your triggers): Death of a loved one Violence and bloodshed Emotional manipulation Themes of fate, loss, and betrayal Romantic angst (on god-level intensity) Initial Thoughts — AKA Me, Screaming into the Void You ever finish a book and just sit there... in silence… staring at the last page like it personally betrayed you? Yeah. That was me. The Veiled Kingdom  by Holly Renee felt like someone handed me my favorite dessert and then slapped it out of my hand right before the last bite. In the best way. This book was magic and heartbreak, secrets and longing, and that slow-burn tension that makes you want to throw your Kindle and then hug it. Holly Renee, ma’am. How dare you? Spoiler-Free Summary If you're here without reading the book: first of all, go fix that. Second: this is a fantasy romance drenched in danger, prophecy, and tension so thick you could spread it on toast. We’ve got a kingdom in hiding, a heroine torn between fate and freedom, and a morally gray love interest who will absolutely ruin you. But also—this review contains SPOILERS starting now. So unless you like pain (or already read it), maybe hop off here.   Spoilers Begin Here: Welcome to the Emotional Breakdown The Worldbuilding: Mysterious and Moody in the Best Way I love fantasy books that don’t spoon-feed the world to you. Holly lets it unfold in layers—like fog peeling back to reveal something jagged underneath. The Veiled Kingdom is cloaked, literally and figuratively, and it feels like a character of its own. Every forest, palace, and hidden passage pulses with magic and menace. It’s not high-fantasy-dump levels of info, but just enough to suck you in and whisper, "Stay a while. Suffer a bit." Our Girl: Nyra  — Not Your Average Heroine Nyra was everything I love in a fantasy MC: sharp-edged, emotionally complex, and not afraid to make messy choices. She wasn’t perfect, but that made her real. She’s burdened by prophecy, haunted by her family’s past, and tangled in secrets that could shatter her world. And let’s be honest— the girl was going THROUGH IT. One of my favorite things about her? She doesn’t just react to the world around her. She fights . She questions. She defies. She lets herself fall in love even when she knows it could destroy her. And Then There’s Him  — Dacre, the Male Lead Who Makes Me Weak Okay. Let’s talk about Dacre . That man could stab me and I’d thank him. He’s that deliciously dark, cold-on-the-outside-but-burning-on-the-inside character who makes your toes curl. Dacre is duty-bound, emotionally repressed, and haunted by tragedy—which of course means he’s exactly the kind of man I want to read about at 2 AM. Their chemistry? Off. The. Charts. I was literally yelling at my screen every time they got close but didn’t kiss. Or touched hands. Or just looked  at each other with that longing pain only Holly Renee knows how to write. Themes That Cut Deep Fate vs. Choice This book is obsessed with the idea of destiny—and what it costs to defy it. Nyra is told again and again that her fate is set. That her role is written. But she pushes back, over and over, even when it hurts. Trust and Betrayal The betrayals hit HARD in this book. Just when you think a character is safe—BAM—twist. The politics, the manipulations, the secrets. UGH. My trust issues got a workout. Love in the Midst of Chaos Dacre and Nyra’s love isn’t soft. It’s not easy. It’s forged through fire and silence and pain. And that’s what makes it so addictive. THE Scene That Broke Me There’s this moment—this wretched, gut-wrenching  moment—when Nyra begs him not to turn away. She’s desperate, raw, in love , and he still walks away. If your heart didn’t completely shatter there… you might be Dacre himself. But THEN— A Twist That Changes Everything In the final pages, Nyra makes her stand. No longer a girl hiding in the shadows—she embraces her bloodline. Her magic. Her power . And she doesn’t wait for permission. She takes it.  She steps into her rightful place as a queen-in-the-making. AND—plot twist— there’s a bigger war brewing . The rebel leaders aren’t just fighting for freedom. There’s another prophecy in play. One that might destroy everything Nyra and Dacre thought they knew. Cliffhanger Central The book ends on a brutal  cliffhanger. Dacre, now emotionally ruined and full of regret, sees what he’s lost. And Nyra? She walks away from the wreckage, harder , stronger , and ready to take back what’s hers. No reunion. No resolution. Just pain, power, and that bitter taste of "to be continued..." Final Thoughts: Why It’s 4.5 Stars (And Not a Full 5) So why not a full 5 stars? Honestly, just a tiny  pacing issue for me in the middle. A few chapters felt like they circled the same emotional loop, and I wanted a bit more forward momentum. But the payoff  was so worth it, it barely dimmed the shine. This is the kind of book you stay up all night for. The kind you reread just to feel again. The kind you shove into a friend’s hands and whisper, “Good luck.” Favorite Quotes (Because I’m Still Crying) “The stars had always watched over me. I just never knew one would fall for me.” “If I’m a monster, it’s because this world made me one.” “She didn’t want a prince. She wanted a weapon. And I was both.” Every line Holly writes feels like it was designed to be highlighted. She knows how to punch you in the chest with just a few words. Let’s Chat — What Did YOU Think? Did Dacre ruin your life too? Did you scream at the last chapter? Are you emotionally unwell in a fun, fantasy-romance way now? • My Return to My Return to the Walter Boys: A Nostalgic Revisit That Left Me... Meh

If you’ve been around for a while, you know I’m a sucker for a good YA throwback. There’s something about revisiting old favorites that feels like catching up with childhood friends—you want to see how they’ve grown, what they’ve been up to, and whether or not they’re still worth your time. So when I heard My Return to the Walter Boys  was dropping, I was intrigued. Excited, even. I loved the chaos, charm, and cringe-worthy boy moments of the original The Walter Boys  back in the day. But this sequel? Let’s just say my return to My Return to the Walter Boys  left me feeling... a little underwhelmed. Spoiler-Free Thoughts (Mostly): I’m giving this one a 3.25-star rating. It’s not bad. It’s not great. It lives in that very lukewarm space of “I read it, I didn’t hate it, but I probably won’t think about it again in a month.” That’s not necessarily a terrible thing—especially in the world of YA, where sometimes you just want something light and familiar—but for a book that felt so long-awaited and hyped up by fans of the first installment, this one kinda flopped on the follow-through. The Nostalgia Factor: Let’s be honest, nostalgia is a powerful thing. I walked into this book with a full heart, ready to swoon, laugh, and maybe even cry a little. The Walter Boys were once the ultimate YA heartthrobs. You had your pick: the broody one, the sweet one, the goofy one, the bad boy—you name it. Each had his moment. And in the original story, that chaotic house full of boys somehow managed to feel both overwhelming and heartwarming. In My Return to the Walter Boys , we do get glimpses of that dynamic again. There are sweet callbacks, little moments that remind you why you fell for this crazy group in the first place. But that’s mostly what they are—glimpses. The sparkle, the chaos, the fun? It just doesn’t hit the same. The Plot: A Bit All Over the Place Without giving too much away, the sequel tries to juggle a lot of threads: reconnections, relationships, misunderstandings, personal growth. All the classic YA ingredients are there, but they’re not as tightly woven as I hoped. At times, the story felt like it was meandering with no clear destination. I caught myself wondering, “Where is this going?” more than once. And don’t even get me started on some of the characters’ decisions. I’m all for teenage angst and questionable choices (that’s half the fun of the genre), but some of the drama in this book felt like it was cranked up just for the sake of it, not because it actually served the story. It made it hard to root for certain characters or take their emotions seriously. Character Development: Hit or Miss I’ll say this—some characters did  get solid development. I appreciated seeing how time had changed a few of the Walter Boys and watching them navigate adulthood (or at least late adolescence). There were moments of maturity, self-reflection, and even vulnerability that felt authentic and earned. Others? Not so much. Some characters felt stuck in the same tropes they were in during book one, which would’ve been fine if we were still in high school. But with everyone supposedly older and wiser, I expected a little more evolution. There were also a few side characters that could’ve used more page time or depth. They were just... there. Romance Level: Mildly Spicy, Mostly Sweet Let’s be real—we’re here for the romance. It’s YA. We want the tension, the swoons, the messy miscommunications and grand gestures. And while My Return to the Walter Boys tried  to deliver on that front, it didn’t land as hard as I hoped. Some relationships felt forced. Others felt unresolved. There were a few scenes that almost  gave me butterflies, but they were fleeting. Part of the issue might’ve been the emotional disconnect. Even in the romantic moments, it felt like the characters were holding back—or maybe the writing was. I found myself craving more depth, more inner monologue, more vulnerability. I wanted to feel  what they were feeling, not just be told. Pacing & Structure: Could’ve Been Tighter This is a big one. The pacing in this book is uneven. Some chapters move quickly, while others feel like they drag on without much payoff. I’m all for a slow burn when it’s done right, but here it felt more like slow... meandering. The structure itself wasn’t bad—it just didn’t feel cohesive. There were too many plotlines competing for attention, and not all of them got the resolution they deserved. A tighter focus on one or two core arcs might have helped the story feel more impactful. Final Verdict: For the Fans, Not the First-Timers At the end of the day, I think My Return to the Walter Boys  is a book written for  the fans—those of us who read the first book, loved it, and wanted just a little more time in that world. And if that’s you, it might still be worth the read. There are enough callbacks and sweet moments to satisfy a craving for closure. But if you’re new to the series or hoping for a sequel that elevates the original, this probably won’t be it. It’s a decent read, but it’s not a standout. Would I reread it? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Only to those who are already invested. Will I still secretly hold out hope for a third book that finally  delivers the emotional punch I’m craving? Absolutely. Have you read My Return to the Walter Boys ? Did it meet your expectations or leave you hanging? Let’s talk about it in the comments—or come find me on Instagram or TikTok and let’s scream about it there. Because even when a book lets me down a little, I always  love talking about it. Until next time, happy reading 💛 Click the image to download the FREE fable app and join TTPS

  • From Friendship to Fireworks-My First Look at Friends With Benefits by Marisa Kanter

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of getting an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of a book you’ve been eagerly anticipating. The fresh, unread pages, the possibility of discovering a new favorite, and—let’s be honest—the satisfaction of getting to read something before the rest of the world. So, when I got my hands on Friends with Benefits by Marisa Kanter (huge thank you to @CeladonBooks!), I knew it was going straight to the top of my TBR. This book has everything I love: friends-to-lovers tension, witty banter, and the promise of a story that balances heart and humor. So, let’s dive into my first impressions, what I’m expecting, and why this should be on your radar. First, What’s Friends with Benefits About? For those who haven’t heard much about it yet, here’s the gist: Friends with Benefits follows [insert character names if available], two best friends who have always been platonic… until they aren’t. When one of them proposes a no-strings-attached arrangement, things start to shift in ways neither of them expected. What begins as a seemingly casual agreement quickly turns into something much more complicated, as real emotions get involved, boundaries blur, and they have to figure out whether risking their friendship for love is worth it. If you’re a fan of books that take you on an emotional rollercoaster while also making you laugh, this sounds like it’s going to be the read for you. Why This Trope Never Gets Old Let’s talk about the magic of the friends-to-lovers trope. Some say it’s predictable, but that’s exactly why it works. The built-in history, the undeniable chemistry, the oh no, I caught feelings moment—it’s everything. There’s something so fun about watching characters struggle with the realization that their “totally platonic” feelings are anything but. Unlike instalove stories, friends-to-lovers romances have that slow-burn effect that keeps you hooked. You know they belong together, but you get to enjoy every moment of their denial, their longing, and (hopefully) their eventual happy ending. If Friends with Benefits delivers on all of this? We might be looking at a new comfort read. What I’m Hoping For in This Book Since I haven’t finished it yet, here are a few things I hope this book delivers: 1. Top-Tier Banter – I need witty, fast-paced dialogue that makes me smile. A good friends-to-lovers story has to have some playful teasing and inside jokes. 2. Genuine Emotional Growth – I want to see these characters struggle with their feelings in a way that feels real. No unnecessary miscommunication, just raw, heartfelt moments. 3. A Satisfying Slow Burn – Nothing too rushed! The best part of this trope is the build-up, so I hope this book lets the tension simmer before it finally explodes. 4. Side Characters That Shine – A good romance isn’t just about the main couple. I love when side characters bring extra charm and dimension to the story. Is This a Must-Read? (My Early Thoughts) So far, Friends with Benefits is giving me exactly what I wanted—cozy vibes, great chemistry, and a storyline that feels fresh despite its classic premise. Marisa Kanter’s writing is engaging, and I can already tell this is one of those books that will leave me smiling (and possibly yelling at the characters to just admit they love each other already). If you’re looking for a romance that’s fun, heartfelt, and full of all the best tropes, I’d say keep this one on your radar! I’ll be sharing my full review soon, but for now, let me know—are you excited for Friends with Benefits? Do you love the friends-to-lovers trope as much as I do? And if you’ve read anything by Marisa Kanter before, tell me what I should pick up next!

  • Obsession-Worthy: Why Punk 57 is my absolute FAVORITE

Rating: 5++++/5 Stars (Would Rate Higher If I Could) Some books leave an impression. Punk 57  by Penelope Douglas? It has my soul . This book isn’t just a favorite—it’s the  favorite. The one I go back to over and over, whether it’s on my Kindle, in a physical copy, or through the audiobook. If there were a limit on how many times you could reread a book before it became part of your DNA, I’d have hit it. But why? Why is Punk 57  that book for me? Let’s talk about it. And fair warning—this review is full  of spoilers . Pen Pals to Lovers: A Trope Done to Perfection Misha and Ryen have been writing to each other since fifth grade, thanks to a school pen pal project. They’ve never met, never seen pictures of each other, but they’ve become each other’s closest confidants. They share everything—dreams, fears, insecurities. They just get  each other. But there’s one rule: No meeting in person. Ever. That all changes when Ryen stumbles into Misha's world by accident. And let me tell you, the girl he meets is not  the girl he’s been writing to. Ryen is the textbook definition of a mean girl—popular, superficial, and playing the high school game with ruthless precision. And Misha? He’s angry. He’s hurt. And he’s ready to make her see exactly what kind of person she’s become. What follows is a deliciously angsty, tension-filled enemies-to-lovers romance with a revenge plot that shouldn’t  be sexy but absolutely is. Misha: The Perfect Broody, Musically Gifted, Morally Gray Hero Misha is everything I love in a romance hero—tortured, passionate, and just a little bit dangerous. He’s got that whole “I hate you but I can’t stay away from you” energy that makes every interaction between him and Ryen electric. But he’s also grieving, dealing with personal loss that makes his need to expose Ryen’s hypocrisy feel even more justified. And can we talk about his music? The way he channels his emotions into lyrics, the way his band, Cipher Core , is woven into the story? It adds another level of depth to his character that makes him impossible not to fall for. Music is such an integral part of Punk 57 , and it’s one of the things that makes the story feel so raw and alive. Misha isn’t perfect, though. He makes mistakes. He’s reckless. He’s downright cruel at times. But that’s what makes his redemption arc so satisfying. He doesn’t just waltz in and fix Ryen—he has to fix himself  too. Ryen: A Flawed, Realistic, and Completely Redeemable Heroine Ryen is complicated, and I love her for it. She’s insecure, desperate for validation, and willing to do whatever it takes to keep her social status intact. But beneath it all, she’s still the girl who writes heartfelt letters, who loves art, who feels like an outcast even when surrounded by people. Her journey in Punk 57  is one of self-discovery and growth, and watching her strip away the mask she’s worn for so long is one of the most satisfying parts of the book. She’s frustrating at times, but that just makes her redemption even more rewarding. She also owns  her mistakes. When she realizes how much she’s hurt people, when she sees how much she’s lost because of her need to fit in, she takes responsibility. She doesn’t become perfect overnight, but she becomes real . And that’s what makes her one of my favorite heroines in romance. Enemies-to-Lovers Done Right The tension between Misha and Ryen is insane . Every moment they’re on the page together is dripping with chemistry, whether they’re fighting, flirting, or toeing the line between love and hate. Douglas writes angst like nobody else, and Punk 57  is a masterclass in slow-burn, tension-filled romance. The push and pull, the banter, the sheer need  between these two— chef’s kiss . Every scene, whether it’s a heated argument or a stolen moment of vulnerability, feels raw and real. And let’s not forget the reveal—when Ryen finds out who Misha really  is? One of the best “oh crap” moments in a romance book, hands down. The Smut? Next-Level. Look, if you’ve read Penelope Douglas before, you know  she doesn’t hold back. The steam in Punk 57  is intense, passionate, and perfectly in tune with the characters. It’s not just there for the sake of it—it means  something. Every encounter between Misha and Ryen is charged with emotion, making it all the more addictive. And the kinks? Let’s just say, Douglas knows how to write a scene that sticks  with you. The Themes: Deep, Dark, and Necessary Beyond the romance, Punk 57  tackles some real  issues—bullying, peer pressure, self-worth. It’s a book that doesn’t shy away from the ugly parts of high school, and it forces its characters (and readers) to confront them head-on. The message? Be who you are. Don’t let fear dictate your choices. Don’t hide behind a version of yourself that isn’t real. It’s a lesson both Misha and Ryen have to learn, and watching them get there is an emotional rollercoaster in the best way. That Ending? Perfection. By the time we get to the ending, every bit of angst, every frustrating miscommunication, and every heart-pounding moment has built up to a resolution that feels earned . Ryen finds herself. Misha lets go of his anger. And together, they finally allow themselves to be the people they were always meant to be—with each other. Final Thoughts: This Book Owns Me. If I could rate Punk 57  higher than five stars, I would. This book has everything—angst, passion, flawed characters, and a love story that feels . It’s the book I return to when I need something that grips my heart and won’t let go. So if you haven’t read Punk 57  yet, what are you waiting for? Just be prepared for an emotional roller coaster that will ruin you in the best way possible. Hey, while I have you- check out the newest drop! • Love, Ghosts, and Mind Games: A Deep Dive into Layla by Colleen Hoover

Rating: 4.75/5 Stars Colleen Hoover has a way of making me question my sanity every time I listen to one of her audiobooks. She could spin a tale about sentient toasters falling in love, and I'd still be all in—my full attention locked in like my life depends on it. Layla is no exception, but let me tell you, this book? This one is in a league of its own. It's weird, it's eerie, it's frustrating, it's romantic—it’s everything that makes you sit up and listen. No wonder it was chosen as the book club pick for Reader's Anonymous in March! Now that I've had some time to really process all the twists and turns and recover from the emotional roller coaster. Join the book club here - fable.co/club/ra-readers-anonymous-with-brittany-932934520348?club_type=free Spoilers ahead. The Setup: Boy Meets Girl, Boy Falls in Love, Boy’s Girlfriend Gets Possessed (?) We start with Leeds Gabriel (yes, Leeds ) and Layla falling in love in a whirlwind romance that can only be described as “so fast it should have caused whiplash.” They meet at Layla’s sister’s wedding, and within what feels like minutes, they’re head over heels. Layla is this bright, chaotic, full-of-life kind of girl, and Leeds is your typical brooding musician with a guitar and a penchant for making questionable decisions. And boy, does he make some questionable decisions. But just when things seem too good to be true, they are. Layla gets shot. Yes, shot. Leeds’ ex, Sable (who I will have words  about later), breaks into their home and nearly kills Layla before getting gunned down herself. Layla survives, but she’s different  afterward. She’s not the same Layla he fell in love with. She’s distant, forgetful, and just… off. And instead of, I don’t know, seeking therapy  or giving her time to heal , Leeds decides the best thing to do is whisk her away to the bed-and-breakfast where they first fell in love. Because that  sounds like a great idea. Things Get Paranormal and Leeds Becomes a Human Red Flag Once they get to the house, weird things start happening. Doors are opening on their own. Layla is losing time. And then, there’s Willow—a ghost, a spirit, an entity that only Leeds can interact with. At first, Leeds thinks he’s losing his mind. But nope, Willow is real. And she has a tragic story: she’s stuck in this house, and she can’t remember who she is. And this is where the real  mind games begin. Leeds, being the genius that he is, starts communicating with Willow through a laptop. (Ghosts can use technology now—good to know.) And slowly but surely, he starts falling for her. Let me repeat that. He starts falling for the literal ghost possessing his girlfriend. This man is out here entertaining full conversations and emotions with a ghost while Layla—who was SHOT and is clearly dealing with trauma—is just trying to exist. The audacity of men, I swear. The Twist That Had Me Reconsidering My Life Choices Here’s where Hoover does what she does best: completely flipping the story upside down. Willow isn’t just some random ghost. Willow is  Layla. Yep. Layla’s soul got displaced during her near-death experience, and Willow—who has been living in some weird limbo—is actually Layla’s consciousness, stuck outside of her own body. The Layla that Leeds has been taking care of? Just her body without her  in it. This is the point where my brain just about short-circuited. Leeds, to his (rare) credit, figures this out and decides the best course of action is to bring Layla back into her own body. And the way he does it? DROWNING HER. He literally drowns his girlfriend. But somehow, miraculously, it works. Layla and Willow become one again, and just like that, she’s whole. And Leeds? Well, he gets his Layla back. And they just… move on. Let’s Talk About That Ending I’ll be honest, the ending felt too  neat. Too convenient. We just spent the entire book unraveling this complicated, supernatural, psychological mess, and then it all wraps up with Layla magically remembering everything and deciding to stay with Leeds? The man fell in love with her ghost form , cheated (emotionally? spiritually? I don’t even know) on her, then literally tried to kill her  to fix things, and we’re just… okay with that? I mean, sure, they love each other, and there’s this whole destiny  element, but I was expecting a little  more fallout. Maybe Layla grappling with what happened? Maybe Leeds needing to prove himself a bit more? Maybe a conversation  beyond “hey, so I drowned you, but in a cute way”? But nope. Love conquers all, I guess. Sable: The Ex from Hell We need to talk about Sable. The psycho ex-girlfriend who set this entire story into motion. She shot Layla. She traumatized Leeds. And yet, we barely get any backstory on why  she did it. She’s just the typical unhinged ex trope. I wanted more . Why was she obsessed with Leeds? What was their relationship actually like? Did Leeds give her any reason to act the way she did? I hate when thrillers throw in a villain just to have a villain without fully fleshing them out, and Sable felt like a missed opportunity. Leeds: The Most Frustrating Love Interest Ever Leeds might just be one of the most infuriating  Hoover love interests I’ve listened to. He’s selfish, emotionally detached, and literally willing to risk Layla’s life to bring back the version of her he wants. He falls in love with a ghost, disregards Layla’s struggles, and is basically the poster child for what not to do in a relationship . Did I still root for him? Yes , because Hoover is evil and makes me care against my will. But do I think he deserved Layla’s instant forgiveness? Absolutely not. Final Thoughts: The Book That Had Me Yelling at My Speaker Even though Layla  is one of the most unhinged  things I’ve listened to in a while, I loved it. It’s messy, chaotic, and completely different from anything else Colleen Hoover has written. The blend of romance, supernatural elements, and psychological tension is masterfully done. And while I do  have issues with Leeds (who doesn’t?), the story itself kept me engaged from start to finish. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Would I also warn people that they might need to take a few breaks to process what is happening? Also yes. If you love books that make you question everything, Layla  is for you. Just maybe don’t take relationship advice from it. Hey, while I have you- check out the newest drop! First-Class Love design available on Tees, Pullovers, and Hoodies. • The Chase by Elle Kennedy - Slow burn or just plain slow?

Elle Kennedy is one of those authors who just gets the college sports romance genre. She nails the humor, the friendships, the angst, and the spice, all wrapped up in fast-paced, bingeable books. The Chase kicks off the Briar U series, a spin-off of her Off-Campus books, and while it had all the right elements—hot hockey players, witty banter, a fiery heroine—it also had a few frustrating ones that kept it from being a five-star read for me. Let's break it down. The Plot Opposites attract with a LOT of miscommunication... Summer Di Laurentis is everything a main character should be-bold, confident, and unapologetically herself. She is bubble, fun, and comes from an ultra-wealthy family(She is in fact Dean's sister, from the original series Off Campus), but she is far from the spoiled rich girl stereotype. Instead, she struggles with ADHD and feeling she's always being underestimated. Fits on the other hand, is quiet, unbelievably artistic, and basically just the opposite of her in every single way. The Tension It is there from the start-Summer wants Fitz, Fitz wants Summer...but also, who doesn't? He pushes her away for reasons that make sense(kind of...to him at least), but the constant push-and-pull got exhausting if I'm being honest here. The 'will they, wont they' dragged on a bit too long(75% of the book to be exact), and at a certain point, I wanted to shake the crap out of Fitz and tell him to make a decision. The Characters I loved one and tolerated the other(you choose) Summer Loved her. She’s confident, but not in an arrogant way, and I liked how her struggles with ADHD were actually a key part of her story rather than just being a throwaway detail. She’s very self-aware and doesn’t let people walk all over her, which made her such a refreshing heroine. Fitz This man. I wanted to like him—I really did. He’s talented, quiet, and introspective, which is a nice contrast to all the cocky, arrogant hockey players we usually see. But his indecisiveness drove me insane. He had feelings for Summer, he knew he had feelings for Summer, yet he kept pulling away, and his reasoning for doing so didn’t always feel justified. Also, at one point, he was pretty judgmental of her, and that did not sit well with me. The side characters were amazing though! Hollis in particular stole the show every single time he showed up, completely bummed he doesn't end up getting his own book not going to lie. The Romance slow burn or just plain slow? This is supposed to be a slow burn, but honestly, it felt more like a slow crawl. The chemistry was there, no doubt about it, but Fitz’s constant back-and-forth made it drag. Every time I thought we were getting somewhere, he’d slam on the brakes again. The payoff was decent once they finally got together, but it took a lot of patience to get there. What Worked Summer's personality ADHD representation Fun and lovable side characters The VIBES of Briar U When the romance FINALLY happened, it was really solid What DIDN'T Work Fitz Fitz's indecision and constant judgment Miscommunication trope(almost as bad as accidental pregnancy) Pacing, so so slow Final Verdict 3.5 Stars Was it entertaining? Yes. Did it have some frustrating moments? Also yes. If you love Elle Kennedy’s writing and don’t mind a hero who takes forever to get his act together, you’ll probably enjoy this one. But if you’re easily annoyed by indecisive love interests, this might not be your favorite in her lineup.
